May 6, 2015 – I love old things that have personal history and that I know have been lovingly used for a purpose.
I just came across them recently when I was organizing some things and found an old lunch box of my Dad’s that was filled with a few items and sent to me by my brother a while back. There are still a few boxes that were shuffled to the back and stored without opening when we moved in, mainly because I know they contain many old things of family heritage that I have to make decisions about.
For now these three items – a folding measuring rule, an old mechanics tape measure, and a very old wood and brass level – will enjoy some time on a shelf where I can see them and think about them.
Eventually they will disappear into a box and be exchanged for something else, but for now I can imagine my Grandad’s hands manipulating these tools to build things in his old workshop back on the farm.

It is hard to make those decisions to keep or not to keep. I hear my Mom say, don’t give away anything you want to keep cause once it is gone it is gone. She told me this when I was packing up my house in Yellowknife. Little did I know then that she wouldn’t be here to see me in my new home. Ahh memories.

I have a folding ruler which I inherited from a friend. Very practical thing to have.
