April 26, 2015 – Today was the annual plant sale at Van Dusen Gardens and that means that the gardens are also open for free.
The annual plant sale usually contains over 20,000 plants and over 10,000 people attend. The gates open at 10am and we were there in line by 9am. There were people who had been in line since 5:30am!!
On one hand, seriously…they are just plants people!
On the other hand…some of the treasures I saw going out that I didn’t have a chance at makes me think it’s almost worth being there earlier.
Regardless, it’s a crazy zoo. We took two carts and Kirk just found a safe place to stand with them while I went in and out of the mayhem, each time returning with some new treasure.
The news crew was even there filming the madness.
After I’d had enough of being jostled and bumped into, and after I truly had collected more plants than I should have, we parked our carts in the holding area and went for a walk in the gardens. The gardens are a jewel in the middle of the sprawl of Vancouver, filled with the most amazing plants from all over the world. They are also a great place to get ideas for plantings, and sometimes they make me wish I had acres to play with.
In a far corner of the gardens is a small pond in a quiet tranquil spot. Two totem poles stand at the water’s edge. This is one of the spirits on the black bear crest totem pole. This pole, and the pole next to it, used to grace the entrance to the park but they have been moved to a more appropriate location deep in the gardens where they can weather and decay naturally, eventually falling and becoming part of the forest again.
