Safety First! (108/365)

April 18, 2015 – Today was the safety inspection of our boat down at the Club. Passed without issue, didn’t think it would be a problem. The issues we are struggling with on our boat are bigger than a safety inspection looks for.

Kirk is now rebuilding our hydraulic steering system, and that will fix one of the two issues holding us at the dock. The other is a fuel delivery problem that has been plaguing us for years.

Steering and fuel…minor issues really.

Hopefully this summer will see our boat back out plying our waters and enjoying enjoying the wonderful nooks and crannies that are unaccessible from shore 🙂

The saying that a boat is a hole in the water that you just throw money into is so true.

Like flares.

Flares only meet legal requirements for four years from the date of manufacture. Then you have to buy new ones.

We try to reduce the impact, so we split our flare purchases across two years so every two years we are throwing out six instead of twelve. But it’s still the equivalent of throwing away $60-$75 every two years.

Just one of the costs of boating, and a relatively small one in the grand scheme of things.

I’d rather throw away old flares and buy new ones than suffer the potential consequence in the worst case scenario.

Besides, the cost of fixing the steering and figuring out the fuel issue will definitely cost a couple of “boat bucks”.

I’m looking forward to getting back out on the water, I miss those relaxing afternoons floating in the sun.

Soon….soon…..

Greedy fellow!

Ha yes – we’ve just replaced ours too. They ain’t cheap and it’s tricky getting rid of the old ones legally in the UK too. You don’t even get the joy of setting the expired ones off.

Great shot too, love the shadows and the saturated colour.

Yes, difficult to dispose of here in Canada too, and also not allowed to shoot them off, for obvious reasons 😉 At our Safety Weekend event the police set up a container for collection and dispose of them safely for everyone.
