January 24, 2015 – Another fun night out at the theatre. Tonight’s show was “One Man, Two Guv’nors”, cute, definitely entertaining, and quite a bit off the wall.
The Stanley is one of the old Vancouver movie theatres that survived the wrecking ball, though it was touch and go for awhile. It used to just be called the Stanley Theatre, today it is The Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage and one of the theatres used by the Arts Club Theatre Company.
The Stanley first opened as a movie theatre in 1930, and showed movies for over sixty years before falling revenues led to its closure in 1991. Its sale was conditional on it not be used as a movie theatre.
After years of threatened commercial redevelopment and proposals intended to gut it and turn it into retail space, the Stanley was renovated as a stage theatre in 1997–1998 and subsequently awarded status as a heritage building.
It’s a wonderful old building and I’m glad it was saved and preserved.

Nigel and I had date night last night too! Bought 5 kg of pitted dates at Famous Foods, among other things in our $400 bill! e.g. maple syrup, honey, cashews, lima beans, sunflower seeds… now to see if I can build a decent bar!
That sounds like it will be a very tasty bar 😉
Hey, can you get maple syrup in bulk there? I refuse to buy the tiny bottles here but haven’t found a source for larger containers of it. When Bob and I lived across from the Stanley you could tell what kind of movie was showing (yes, it was oh so long ago) by the mood of the crowd when they came out of the theatre afterwards. Conan and Star Wars were noisy. Speaking of which the jays are squawking! Must go check them out. I’m going to go find some snowy owls on the edge of the city in a little while too.
