Emptiness on the Horizon (6/365)

January 6, 2015 – I was working out at the Cultus Lake Lab today, but traffic was lighter than I expected and I got there a little early so I drove on to the lake to see if I could find something to photograph.  Jade Bay provided a great opportunity for a moody shot of so much more than nothingness.

In the summer the lake is covered in boats and jet skis and it’s almost impossible to find a parking spot, let alone actually get to the lake. It isn’t a place I have any desire to visit most of the time. I have come here late in the summer, but only because it is one of the locations that Cultus Lake sockeye salmon fry are released.

However, Cultus Lake looks a little different in January….a little more peaceful….

This morning, the cold winter fog blanketed much of the lake, obscuring the far shore and making it seem much larger than it really is.

I like the hauntingly lonely feel to places like this in the winter. I always find that fog makes many locations strangely inviting to me. There is something about the stillness of the water, the stillness of the air, and the lack of anything moving on the lake, that calms and stills the mind.
