35-52-2014: Taste Summer

August 31, 2014 – I don’t know why, but when September is looming only hours away, I always start to think of the season as fall, even though there are still three weeks of summer left. The nights are cooler, meaning sleeps are better. But the days are shorter too. Mornings aren’t as bright, and I have those “Hmmm, is it cloudy or clear?” moments where you just can’t quite tell until it gets a bit lighter.

But the local tastes of summer aren’t gone yet. Peaches are available and oh so good right now. Pears and blueberries abound, and local corn is at its finest right now. Carrots are sweet, and garlic is fresh.

And do you remember when buying a watermelon meant needing about ten friends to help you eat it? Not any more! Now you can buy a super sweet mini melon, just perfect for two!

Dont’ count summer out just yet, and don’t forget to take advantage of all those wonderful late summer flavours!
