June 3, 2012 – The three of us hopped on the first ferry out of Tsawwassen this morning, had a buffet breakfast at our table overlooking the passing waters and landed in Victoria for a day at the Royal British Columbia Museum.
The BC Ferry system connects the Mainland with the Sunshine Coast, Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii, many of the Gulf Islands, and various other small Islands along the BC Coast as a part of the BC highways network. It’s often a thorn in our side with delays, fare hikes, and breakdowns. But you have to admit that when you ride one of the Spirit class vessels through Active Pass, it’s a pretty fabulous system in a pretty fabulous place.
When I ride the ferries I tend to spend a lot of time staring out at the water rushing by the hull of the vessel. I think we make a lot of sacrifices in the name of living some sort of life that society says we should achieve to meet some amorphous goal. But in the end, maybe we make the wrong sacrifices. I made some career sacrifices to stay here in this amazing place, and I don’t regret those choices. I love this place and simply cannot imagine living anywhere else. Leaving would have been the wrong sacrifice.
