287/365 (Oct 14, 2011) – Fall is the best time for fresh crisp apples. Apples that aren’t covered in wax and 6 months old, having been kept in coolers to supply the masses out of season. I remember when all one could buy in the grocery store were Red Delicious and Golden Delicious, Spartans, Macintosh. and Granny Smiths. Now there are so many more varieties. Heritage varieties, resurrected from the back end of orchards or developed from unique crossings. Elstars, Braeburns, Ambrosias. So many wonderful varieties of apples, all with different textures and flavours. I still consider myself lucky to have grown up with an Okanangan orchard in the family. Grandpa grew awesome apples.
