144/365 (May 24, 2011) – I spent enough time on a farm growing up to hold to a strict law that says corn is not ready for human consumption until it reaches peak sweetness, in late August or early September. But breeding programs and new varieties are challenging my corn belief system. I frequently find corn available in the spring and early summer that voids my former prejudice. I am often disappointed, sort of the same way as a tomato in January looks good, but holds no flavour whatsoever. Ditto for strawberries in February. But more and more often, I am pleasantly surprised by the flavour, sweetness, and crisp juiciness of corn that is otherwise, too early.
So if I see it, and the kernels are small(ish) and milky when punctured, then I’ll give it a go. Like today. Stopped in at Granville Island and saw this…which prompted a BBQ tonight.
Yum!

This shot makes me think of corn popping off the cob when you take a bite, nice DOF
