123/365 (April 3, 2011) – Had a craving for something sweet last night.
We don’t usually keep anything that could be considered “junk-food” in out place. We don’t usually eat dessert, that’s really a rarity and generally reserved for dinner out. I make all my own jam, we buy real peanut butter (ingredients = peanuts…just peanuts), and we haven’t bought store bought cookies in, well, I honestly can’t remember how long. We realized granola bars are just glorified candy bars so don’t buy those any more. I make my own granola now. Yogurt too. Those are weekly to-do’s. No chips or cheezies can be found in the cupboards, ice cream is rare in the freezer. Sometimes I make it, usually we’ll just go buy a bar, that’s about three or six times a year.
But when I get a craving for something sweet, I know I can whip up oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, the exact same recipe my Mom made when I was a child, in about 25 minutes to the cooling rack. And let’s be realistic…how long can you “really” let cookies cool for before you dive into them?
And what complements an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie more than a glass of cold milk…..nothing that I can think of.
Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies

Sift together flour, baking soda, and salt. Cream shortening until fluffy. Add sugars and cream well. Beat in eggs, add hot water, add sifted ingredients. Add chocolate chips and oatmeal. Mix well. Add vanilla. Drop by spoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet and bake at 350°F for 15 – 20 minutes.
Makes approximately 4 dozen cookies
Note: Equally good if the chocolate chips are replaced with raisins, or half cranberries and half white chocolate chips

This looks delicious. Now I’m hungry.

Me too. I don’t keep sweet things in either and it’s a real problem the odd time the sweet craving kicks in.

Yep, perfect combo, Paige. You’re pretty resourceful for a city girl 🙂

City Girl! Pah! I spent every summer of my childhood going up and down the hill being slave labour on one set of grandparents’ farm, and on the other set of grandparents’ orchard. And I loved every moment of it too 😉
