146/365 (May 26, 2010) – I am in love with toy cameras, so much so that when I ordered this Mini Diana camera, I had to have the little Diana charm.
I know, I’m a geek. I love this thing, the flash is almost as big as the camera, and the camera barely seems big enough to hold a roll of 35mm film!
At least toy cameras are cheap by comparison. And I love returning to analogue. In a world where everyone wants instant gratification, it’s nice to step back and exercise a bit of patience and anticipation for the magic of the old fashioned film photo.
The other reason I am looking forward to going a bit backwards is that it will require a bit more thought. Digital cameras take a lot of fun out of photography, they are too easy to get good results from. Film requires a bit more thought because you are limited. However, that said, toy cameras are at the bottom end of that spectrum since they have no focus ring, virtually no aperture settings, and certainly no shutter speed controls. So on one hand, there is less to think about…on the other…you need to think a bit more about lighting in order to get anything worthwhile out of them. Of course “worthwhile” is open to interpretation with these things.
