137/365 (May 17, 2010) – I planted a calla in the pond two years ago. The first year it didn’t do a lot, last year it did virtually nothing, but today this opened up. There is something about callas that I just love, in a way, they are sort of like orchids to me. A bit finicky, but when they open, lovely to behold their soft, sultry beauty.
I haven’t done a lot to the garden in a couple of years, but it needs a bit of work this spring. After yanking an obstinate Yucca out and ridding myself of a lilac that refused to do anything except sucker and send out gangly shoots, I have a little patch that I need to decide what to do with. I need low growing, drought tolerant plants that can fill in some space under and beside a new basalt bench.
What to plant, what to plant…

Kind of like Maplethorpe’s flowers. Nice.
