Day 81 – Spring has Sprung!

81/365 (March 22, 2010) – Nothing interesting to say today…. I was nose to the grind trying to finish up some work I am doing on a contract that more or less comes to an end in just over a week… whew! That and getting ready for teaching tonight. And in all that I didn’t even think to go pick up a key to let us in to the room I teach in. Panic! By a stroke of flukey luck the master deadbolt hadn’t been done so I was able to use my club member key to gain access to it. Whew!

Every time I think I know more than is humanly possible about marine radio and associated safety equipment, my class stumps me on some new, trivial usually, point. I honestly think this is the worst course in CPS to try and teach because the technology changes daily and the material in the course manual is static. If I don’t keep up on it and make sure I present the most current information they will tear me apart. Not a course that someone can just pick up and teach on a whim if they don’t know a lot about the material already, or if they haven’t done a boatload of research before walking into that room. teaching biology is a cakewalk next to this!

And please tell me why there always has to be that one guy (sorry, it always is a guy) in the room who feels the need to display his technological superiority and intellectual prowess over all the other students?  If he thinks he knows so much, why on earth is he in the class anyway. Just challenge the exam and let us move through the material without interrupting us every 5 minutes with some tidbit of knowledge that doesn’t actually advance the course. If you stick your hand up, please have a question and not a statement…please…? I’m sorry I’m a woman and you feel the need to assert your feelings of gender superiority. But it adds 20-30 minutes to every class and frustrates everyone.

But magnolias, now magnolias are lovely against the blue spring sky. And that’s about the extent of what’s left of my brain power today.
