Day 77 – Water Hawthorne

by The Philosophical Fish

77/365 (March 18, 2010) – One of the harbingers of Spring, the water hawthorne starts blooming as early as January some years, if it’s been particularly warm, and continues flowering until long after the crocuses and daffodils are gone. Only when the temperatures rise and the pond water warms up does it retreat to the mud and lie in wait until fall when a few leaves may show themselves again, and another flower ‘might’ show up again.

As a side note, the flowers are apparently edible.

Beautiful work, as you said the reflections and stems make this shot great.
