Do you have any of those bizarre things in your family that really don’t deserve to be around anymore, but that you just can’t quite rid yourself of for one reason or another?
For me, that’s Black-eyed Santa.
When I was growing up we had this plastic Santa tree-topper. At some point, the bulb inside touched and scorched the plastic inside. My Dad, ever the Mr. Fixit, took him apart and put a smaller, safer bulb inside (I think…perhaps I should check…) and taped him all back together.
For years we didn’t know what had happened to Black-eyed Santa, but with my father’s pack-rat tendencies, we knew he had to be around still. So when we helped Dad move to Cranbrook a few years ago and started cleaning things out we came across him. He even came back to the light when Dad put up a tree in his new house.
Then Dad moved into an apartment and had no room for full sized tree. A small debate ensued over where Black-eyed Santa would move or more specifically, that he simply MUST not be tossed out, and my brother had him for a season. Then he showed up on my doorstep in a box this past year. And so now old Black-eyed Santa has moved to the top of our tree.
Some things are just too priceless to replace, he’s a bit of a family legend …and really, I’m not a traditionalist in any sense…but I just find him so fun I had to put him up. Not to mention that he kinda looks like he is picking his nose… how can you NOT have him around!

LOL! I’m glad that Black-eyed Santa will always be gracing the top of someone’s tree.

Sweet story … makes me wonder what will happen to Black-eyed Santa in the future. I enjoyed your Christmas tree set, particularly the unusual almost-sombre colouring of some of them … lends a little more gravitas, I think, and moves away from the now-accepted garishness of some images.

Thanks all!
Jacqui, I hadn’t thought of the colours as sombre, but I suppose you are right. It’s been three years since we put up a tree or any Christmas decorations, so opening the boxes was a bit of a surprise. I had forgotten I had purchased a load of gold, copper, crystal and orange decorations on sale three years ago. We used to do our tree in red and gold, but changed to a more monochromatic theme. Santa is a bit out of place here, but we like him, he brings a smile to our faces. I think he will be with us for some time….maybe my niece or nephew will appreciate him when they grow up…

That’s a very beautiful story, like a Christmas’ short story. One to remember. I never saw a Santa on the top of the tree. Only stars. That’s original too.
wow! this photo deserves a flower!
it has captured my heart!
