So we stewed about the Xterra the other night. The plan was to call the dealership back the next morning and just let him know that we were off boating and couldn’t put the cheque back in the bank until Tuesday so he had the weekend to think our offer over.
On the way to the boat we stopped at the Automall and decided to take an FJ Cruiser for a drive. The FJ was initially my first choice, but after looking at them for a bit I figured the visibility looked terrible. Well, you never know until you try. So we jumped in one and took it for a drive.
It was an automatic, so I had to try and overlook that negative, they didn’t have a 6-speed in stock to demo, and I can say I DID NOT like the automatic. Boring to drive. Give me a stick please!
Visibility really is awful. But it handled nicely on loose gravel and stopped in a nice controlled manner when I stomped on the brakes.
When we got back to the dealership, looked it over a bit more, really low cargo room…not really what I’d want overall… The dealer asked me about a 4Runner (he knew that I have one) and I said, too much money for what they are now and they really aren’t the same vehicle they were back when.
Then something funny happened. I don’t think there are many older salesmen that will actually talk to a woman about a vehicle…and then steer her over to the pickup trucks. At least I’ve never had it happen. He talked me into looking at the Tacoma, a truck I have always actually liked, since the 4Runner is built on it. But I had dismissed it when Kirk suggested it because of a desire to have a vehicle we could comfortably carry more than two people in…. well…who’da thunk! I jumped in the back of the double cab and it has MORE room than the back of the 4Runner! And it felt like home. Still the similar controls of the 4Runner….it just felt right. I think it might be strange to drive something with a box, I wouldn’t put a canopy on it, just a hard tonneau cover….but now I’m thinking a bit differently….
I love Toyota, I know Toyota, and … this is basically the same vehicle I’ve driven for the past 17 years….just with a box on the back…. and it comes in a six-speed manual transmission……
……so we didn’t call the Nissan Dealer afterall…. and now I’m rethinking….about this…..
