Late Saturday afternoon I was trying to get the garden cleaned up. I figure we will probably have a few visitors in the next two weeks with this wedding thing happening…and the deck and garden were a disaster after the fall and winter passed through. So out I finally went to clean up leaves and survey the damage wrought by the snowfall.
While I was on the lower deck snipping off broken fern fronds I had a creepy feeling that someone had been on our deck. I don’t know why, perhaps it was just all the broken plants that made it feel as if someone had tromped through, but I knew it was just the heavy snow that had damaged everything.
Then yesterday I was planting the bulbs that hadn’t made it into the ground in October and looked over in a corner and noticed a large rock was lying at an odd angle. I realized it had fallen over and went around to right it when I realized our gargoyle was missing!
A number of years ago someone scaled our fence and stole a tiki torch. No great loss there, I put the other one next to the fence in the hopes someone would take its partner…no takers.
But this time, some creep climbed the outside fence, knocked over a large rock to gain access, and stole our favourite gargoyle! I’m not even sure how he could be seen from the outside, he was hunkered down behind a rock and had a fern draped over him.
He was our longtime garden companion, crouching in the corner. Maybe winter was too much for him….maybe he needed a vacation….I hope he has a nice new garden to crouch in somewhere…..

I’m sad, I went into my garden yesterday and discovered that someone had stolen my little crouching friend…..
