Visit to the Provincial Capital

by The Philosophical Fish

July 16, 2017 – I’m in Victoria for a few days for a conference. Not a conference I’ve attended before, and although it’s definitely related to what I do, it’s unrelated to anything I’ve ever formally studied, but I thought it pertinent as a learning experience. And that means not a lot of people I know well, although there was still a reunion as a former labmate and big brother, and our former supervisor and his partner in life’s crimes were also at the reception this evening.

Even though it’s not far, Victoria is not somewhere I get to very often, mostly because it’s a bit of a pain to get here. It’s always a conundrum whether to take the Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo ferry and drive down the Island, or drive to Tsawwassen and take the ferry to Swartz Bay. Neither is great, but at least on the former trip one gets the stress of getting onto the Island out of the way quickly.

In hindsight, that’s the way I should have gone. The traffic through Vancouver’s downtown core was terrible and I didn’t even get off the North Shore before I found myself stuck in traffic as something on the Lion’s Gate Bridge ground everything to an utter standstill for about 20 minutes.

Oh well, in the end it worked out fine and the trip through Active Pass was lovely.

And once in Victoria and after the reception was over, I took the opportunity to go for a walk around the waterfront and catch the falling sun’s glow on some of the landmarks. Victoria really is a very pretty city.

I'd love to hear from you :)
