June 19, 2015 – Remember the days when every photograph was precious by virtue of being exposed on the film medium?
Most shots were thought out, the roll carefully taken for developing (or developed personally), the photographer eagerly anticipating of waiting to see what the results were.
Now we shoot to our heart’s content. Random shots of everything around us…breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks in between. We incessantly point the camera at ourselves in order to say “I was here”.
Hardly anyone uses film anymore, let alone takes the effort to print photographs. We store them on hard drives, on our phones, in the cloud. I wonder how many people still print their photos and get them into albums.
Families used to pull out the albums at gatherings, now we have to crowd around a phone or a computer monitor.
And remember the days of the slide show?
I love the digital medium, but I kind of miss the anticipation of that envelope of photographs after returning from a vacation.

I miss film camera’s would still use mine if it didn’t cost so much for film and development.
I used to use Costco, but they stopped developing film a couple of years ago.
I know, still have some rolls of black and white film in my freezer and a roll of film in a print camera that I have no idea what is on it but haven’t figured out where to develop it so it sits.
There are still a number of places that develop – London Drugs, Kerrisdale Cameras in Vancouver, Lens & Shutter on Broadway, The Lab, ABC Photo, ……
Photography wasn’t ‘free’, so you thought twice about taking that shot. On a limited budget when you were younger or in school, photography was inaccessible to many. On the plus side, there weren’t too many selfies.
I loved my Photography 11 class at PGSS.. It was absolutely wonderful to learn how to take special care to get the perfect shot, and then to develop the film into a finished product. I would love to be able to use my Dad’s Cannon with his old lenses with actual film..
wait for it, everything old will be new again…. look at vinyl.
