Memory of a Friend

by The Philosophical Fish

I was scrolling through my Facebook friend list today and paused when I reached a certain name. He died almost a year ago. It is strange to see his name there. His family deleted his Flickr account and all of his photos, that was particularly upsetting, but at least all the comments he made on my photos in the short time I knew him remain. But his Facebook account still exists. It’s strange how in today’s digital world a person can leave, but their words and images can remain. In spite of the fact that he has passed from this world, it still seems like he must still be there in the UK. We became friends online, and we only had the opportunity to meet in person once, but it was a great deal of fun and I am terribly sad that I will never have the opportunity again.

Is it strange that I have not removed him as a Facebook Friend?

I can’t believe it has been a year already! He’ll always be remembered and I’m glad to have photos of our various trips together, even if his no longer remain on Flickr. His comments still do. I haven’t removed him either.

Hi Helena, yes, I was poking through my photos and came across that one of everyone on the boat in Poole Harbour. The memories of that day make me smile. I sometimes wonder if I’d have latched onto Flickr so strongly if he hadn’t come along and given it such a personality. I’m certainly glad he did since it gave me the opportunity to meet you and some of the others.
