Lessons in Cakes

by The Philosophical Fish

The cake has taken more twists and turns than anything else in the wedding planning process. Mainly because I just can’t stomach the associated cost. We started off looking at a web site suggested by a friend. That was when we discovered that the “reasonable” baker charged a minimum of $5.65 per serving or higher, minimum cost $500, plus $100 deliver and associated other costs. Run away.

Next came the idea of cupcakes….still very costly and the place that is nearby has a few very terrible reviews.

Next stop, chocolate fountain. Seemed like a good idea at first. Except fruit browns, and any moisture that might get into the chocolate had the potential of seizing the entire fountain. Pass/

Back to cake. A friend of a friend has a catering company. Said she could do a cake for $275. Sent photos. Price increased.

Visited the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts and gave my budget. Said probably, come back Tuesday. Whoops, just looked, $7.00 per serving!

Saturday night, attend a party at a friends house. Member of our volunteer group arrives with a cake box. She is taking a cake decorating course at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts…for her wedding planning business. And it was fantastic! A conversation later, and Jennifer says she has a cake to decorate for her class to practice and will try the design if I send photos.

Today she sends photos, it’s perfect! Exactly the design we both were attracted to. So, her plan is to fondant cover a fake cake and then we will have a slab for eating with buttercream icing. Sounds perfect.

Maybe the saga of a wedding cake is finally over???
