Granny's Sewing Kit (246/365)

September 3, 2015 – When did they last sell thread on wooden spools?

I opened a cupboard and saw an old decorative metal box that says “Mother’s Mending Kit” on the lid. It made me smile because it used to belong to my Granny.

Just another one of the odd and inexplicable things I kept when we cleaned out her house years ago. I remember Granny sewing at her machine by the window where she could look out at the lilacs where the hummingbirds would sit and rest.

She was a wizard with a needle and thread.

I mostly make knots.

And then Kirk usually has to rescue me before I throw a fit (or throw whatever it is I am trying to mend – usually a button onto a shirt or something -across the room) because I can’t untangle the knot I’ve generated.

Patience…not one of my strong suits.

But opening the box gave me fond memories of someone who epitomized patience…..

I'd love to hear from you :)

My Mom got some things out of my Grandmas house for me. Rolling pin, cutting boards, serving spoons…she made and served a lot of meals with those things. I will be so pleased to use them, too

These are the sorts of things I also took. I have a few kitchen tools that I used regularly and there is a familial warmth whenever I use them.

Years ago I inherited my paternal great-Grandmother’s treadle sewing machine, complete with gadgets still in the drawers. I love those old gadgets, it’s as if the machine is just waiting to be used again.

wow! I have never used a treadle machine, but I noticed they are very popular in Thailand where people don’t have access to power

Great memories of pre-treadle (hand wheel) too. You’re blessed to have these pieces of your history.
