Disappearing Technology

by The Philosophical Fish

First there were cassettes (that’s how far back my computer memories go), then there were floppies (of increasingly smaller sizes). Zip drives followed, then Jazz drives. CDs, then CDRs, then DVDs and DVDRs. Flash drives got bigger, and then the cloud came along. Now we store so much elsewhere, without copies in hand, digital or otherwise. Computers don’t even come with drives to access any of the old storage media anymore, though I keep an external drive in a drawer somewhere, just in case, but how much longer will it even be recognized?

I sometimes wonder what would happen if the power, everywhere, just went….off.

How much information would we lose collectively?

How much information do we have that is not stored on paper somewhere?

It’s a bit frightening to think about, isn’t it?

Libraries still have a lot of paper though most have stopped getting paper copies of many journals due to cost. Do you make prints of your favorite photos? And what is the lifespan of that print?

Nice processing. I have hundreds but rarely play the music ones or watch the dvds.

To learn how to use textures in photoshop. Disc was free with a camera magazine I purchased a while ago. Just need to put into practice what I’ve learnt.
