Day 337 - Good Things Come in Small Packages

337/365 (December 3, 2010) – I love popcorn. Not that crappy stuff that they sell you for an arm and a leg at the theatre, the stuff that has strange chemicals in it, and “butter flavoured oil product topping”.

And not that strange stuff that you buy in a weird waxy bag and put in the microwave that also tastes like strange chemicals.

When I was a kid we had a funny little popcorn popper with a coil heater and a tin pan with a glass lid that sat on top of it. You put oil in the bottom and then put the popping corn in, then turned it on and watched it start to sizzle and pop. You had to get it off in time or some would burn.

The we moved up in the world, sometime in the late 70’s or early 80’s, and bought an air popper. No oil, perfect popped corn, nothing burnt. When I left home I took that popper with me.

Flash forward 24 years…and I still use that same air popper. I lived off popcorn when I was writing my Masters and PhD theses. It was quick “food” that kept me occupied and didn’t take time away from my writing.

I hope my popcorn popper never dies. I wonder how many people have a 30 year old electric air popcorn popper. Some things actually do last!

Doesn’t everyone have a 30-yr old popper? We got ours in 1983 when we lived in the bush and generated our own power. Had to run around shutting off lights to ensure the 1,300 watts needed to heat kernels enough to pop! Ours has the little metal tray in the “spout” which melts exactly enough butter (not margarine!) for each batch. Tried the microwave stuff once and still wonder what the hell it was that I ate???

Ah, mine has a little plastic tray in the top that melts the butter (agreed…NEVER margarine!). Sadly, that cracked and can’t be used for that purpose anymore.
