November 11, 2016 – Rain or shine, we attend Remembrance Day ceremonies. Usually we attend the ceremony at the Victoria Park cenotaph; three years ago, in the cold and the snow, I attended the ceremonies at the cenotaph in Prince George, alone and very reflective, while Mom lay in the hospital, but this year we finally attended the Marine service that our Yacht Club puts on at Cates Park.
Our Commodore was on board the vessel in the photo, and I was pleased at the size of the crowd that grew on the shore; in recent years the attendance at Remembrance Day ceremonies has swelled. A piper played from the boat, an Aurora long range patrol plane flew over the ceremony, and a wreath was placed on the water in remembrance to mariners lost in the wars.
The weather held off, no rain and no wind, it was even reasonably warm for November, and we were out on the water with friends, celebrating and remembering those who have left us better for their sacrifices.
On the trip back we transited Second Narrows and a train passed overhead; three levels of transportation – cars at the top level, trains in the middle, and us boaters down on the water.
One thing that was dangerous about today’s time on the water was that, as we looked around at the 20 or so vessels from Burrard Yacht Club and the Deep Cove Yacht Club, we realized that we will be debt free again soon, in about six weeks actually.
We have a boat….but we’ve been pining for a new one for a few years….
Hmmmm……..we should probably try to be without debt for awhile again….we’ll see how long that lasts.
