A Place for Your

March 20, 2015 – It’s a multi-billion dollar business…storing junk people can’t, or won’t, get rid of.

We live in such a materialistic society. We always need more stuff, and most of us are guilty of it, at least at some point. Consumerism drives the frenzy, that and the need to keep up with everyone else.

Why do we care so much about “stuff”?

George Carlin had a fabulous rant about “stuff”, and it’s pretty accurate for many.

I can’t stand clutter and those shows like ‘Hoarder’ make me shudder. They also send me into a headspace where I just need to get rid of junk. But we lived in a tiny condo for almost 20 years and that meant that things like SCUBA gear, hockey gear, ski gear, Christmas decorations, etc needed a place to live. And over the years I collected books I didn’t want to get rid of, acquired a lot of things when my Granny died, more things when my Dad went into a home, and even more stuff when Mom died.

Finally we moved into what I believe will be our forever home, and if it isn’t, I don’t imagine we will ever buy any thing any bigger. So this is our space and it became time to get rid of everything that didn’t fit into it.

It’s been a process, and there have been a lot of items that hold great memories that have had to find new homes. But I can’t stand the thought of things just being buried in boxes. If it isn’t useful or can’t find a space to be showcased…it simply has to go. Of course there are a few exceptions. There are some things I intend to pass on the either my niece or one of my female cousins. But things like old class notes, old textbooks that I really have no use for, dishes I will never use, books I will never read again, clothes that I will never wear again, pictures I will never put on the walls again…all of these have to go.

So, we are doing our best to not contribute any further to the multi-billion dollar business of storing crap we don’t need!

On a mission to empty our locker and never have another one again!

We are getting close….we can see the end of it and just have one or two difficult to dispose of items because of their size and nature.

Soon…soon….

I'd love to hear from you :)

We may need a storage locker for the harp trunk–but at least that is a tax deduction! Of course, some sails will conveniently fit in there too. But I concur with what you say about materialism. I intend to invest in wine!
